| Devon Young Farmers Club
With over 700 clubs in England and Wales including 37 in Devon alone, the Devon Young Farmers Club, dating back to the 1920's, was started to give the youngsters of the countryside a way of socialising with other young people in their areas. Today by joining the Young Farmers Club or the YFC, one can meet new people, develop skills, server the community, travel abroad, take part in competitions and, more importantly, have a great time doing them all! Members of clubs are the only ones who run them. This means that clubs only do those things that they feel are fun and important. Socialising was and is the original idea of the Young Farmers Club and one can get plentiful opportunities to make many new friends through the hundreds of YFC events, ranging from local YFC discos to the Grand Winter Ball. Sporting events such as football, rugby, ten pin bowling, tug of war and many others present a fun filled way to meet fellow members. Members are eligible for local and National awards by participating in the various Countryside Action Projects, usually aimed at improving the local environment or helping the community. Its hard work of course but that is easily compensated by the fun and sense of achievement everyone gets! Also, sponsored bike rides, bed pushes and plastic duck races all benefit both Local and National Charities. Dramas and Pantomime’s are conducted every year involving the whole club. Participating in a Carnival Float is another great way of joining in with the local public events. And Young Farmers can travel to a huge variety of places from Amsterdam to Australia, getting involved in many things everywhere! New skills like public speaking, debating, car maintenance and computer skills can be gained through the Young Farmers Club. On completion of these “Skills for Life” projects, the young farmers will receive an YFC Certificate of Achievement, which looks good for your CV and is helpful in job seeking. |
